5 Eye Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Changes in your eyes can be easy to dismiss. Here are five warning signs worth noticing, and why some of them need prompt attention.

Sometimes, the smallest changes deserve the closest attention.

We depend on our eyes throughout the day, from reading and working to recognising the people around us. Yet changes in our vision can sometimes go unnoticed or be dismissed as tiredness.

Blurred vision, recurring headaches, flashes of light, floating spots and eye discomfort can have different causes. Some are relatively minor, while others require prompt medical assessment.

Understanding these five warning signs can help you make informed decisions about your eye health.

Five signs to watch for

01

Blurred Vision or Difficulty Seeing Clearly

Are objects looking unclear? Do you find it difficult to focus on things that previously appeared sharp?

Blurred vision may be associated with refractive errors, eye strain or various eye conditions. The cause cannot be determined from the symptom alone.

What should you do?

Arrange an eye examination for persistent or unexplained blurred vision. Sudden changes in vision need urgent medical assessment.

02

Frequent or Recurring Headaches

Do headaches occur repeatedly while reading, using digital screens or concentrating on nearby objects?

Some headaches may be associated with eye strain or vision problems. However, headaches can have many other causes and should not automatically be attributed to the eyes.

What should you do?

Seek medical advice if headaches keep returning. Sudden, severe headaches or headaches with sudden vision changes require urgent assessment.

Notice the change. Seek the right care.

Don’t wait for a small change in your vision to become something you can no longer ignore.

03

Sudden Flashes of Light

Have you noticed brief flashes, sparks or streaks of light even when there is no obvious source of light around you?

New flashes can sometimes be associated with changes in the vitreous gel inside the eye or problems affecting the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

Urgent advice

Seek urgent eye assessment, especially if flashes occur with new floaters, reduced vision or a shadow across your field of sight.

04

Spots, Dots or Floating Shapes

Do small dots, threads, rings or shadow-like shapes seem to drift across your vision when you look around? These are commonly known as floaters.

Long-standing floaters may be harmless. However, a sudden increase in floaters can sometimes indicate a retinal tear or another problem that needs urgent care.

Urgent advice

A sudden increase in floaters, especially with flashes of light, a dark curtain or reduced vision, needs urgent eye assessment.

05

Eye Pain, Redness or Sensitivity to Light

Painful eyes, noticeable redness, unusual discomfort or difficulty tolerating bright light deserve attention.

These symptoms can result from different conditions, including irritation, inflammation or infections. The seriousness depends on the cause and accompanying symptoms.

What should you do?

Seek prompt medical advice for unexplained eye pain or significant redness. Severe pain, sudden vision loss or marked light sensitivity with pain warrants urgent assessment.

Urgent care

When your vision changes suddenly, act quickly.

Sudden vision loss, new flashes with floaters, a dark shadow across your sight or severe eye pain can signal a time-sensitive eye problem.

Seek urgent eye care or emergency medical attention. Do not wait for a routine appointment if these symptoms appear.

  • Sudden vision loss
  • New flashes with floaters
  • A dark shadow across your sight
  • Severe eye pain

Three things worth remembering.

01
Notice

Pay attention to changes.

Notice new or unusual symptoms rather than assuming they will always go away on their own.

02
Act

Know when to seek help.

Sudden vision changes and certain painful eye symptoms need urgent medical assessment.

03
Care

Make eye health a priority.

Arrange appropriate eye examinations and discuss persistent symptoms with a qualified professional.

Because every moment of clear vision matters.

Awareness starts with understanding. Pay attention to changes in your eyes, seek professional guidance when needed and make your vision a priority.
